From electrical appliances and clothing to cosmetics and food: The list of products that travel the postal and courier route every day to reach their destination is long - and will probably become even longer in the future.

The main reasons for this are globalization and the flourishing online trade. This is because the increasing number of available suppliers and products is prompting more and more people to buy their desired items online and have them delivered instead of buying them in a local store.

According to the German Parcel and Express Logistics Association (BIEK), more than 4 billion parcel shipments were recorded nationwide in 2020. This represents an increase of 10 percent within just one year, as well as an all-time record high. Further growth is forecast for the future - both for BC2 and B2B.

As a result, shipping boxes are playing an even more important role in our day-to-day business. This is because they ensure that the goods ordered survive their often long and bumpy journeys intact. But the potential of cardboard boxes is far from exhausted with goods protection alone.

Shipping packaging fulfills a whole range of functions and therefore makes a significant contribution to a positive customer experience. The focus is not always only on the delivery process:

Goods protection: The primary goal of a shipping package is to protect the contained goods (as well as its product packaging) from soiling and damage caused by transport and external influences such as light, water and dust.

Storage and transport: The typically rectangular format allows cartons to be stacked on top of each other in racks and on pallets. This makes the best use of available space in warehouses and vehicles and saves time and therefore financial expenses during loading activities.

Collective function: Shipping cartons often contain several products, depending on the order. This bundling reduces the consumption of resources and also facilitates the order check that precedes the shipment of goods.

Information: Shipping packaging can be marked with important information. Examples include information about weight, number of pieces and expiration date, as well as warnings for fragile and dangerous goods.

Shipping boxes are available in different designs. It therefore depends first and foremost on your individual wishes and product requirements which type of carton represents the best solution.:

Hinged bottom shipping cartons are probably the most commonly used form of shipping packaging. They have a simple design and are therefore very quick and easy to assemble. Nevertheless, the construction proves to be extremely robust and, in combination with our double-wall EB cardboard, is even suitable for transporting heavy products.

Shipping boxes with flap lids are just as robust and load-bearing, but also score points with a particularly practical element: a flap lid. This gives your package a stylish look, is practical to handle and resealable - ideal for e-commerce.

OUR MATERIALS: THE PERFECT FLUTE

Cardboard boxes are more than just thick paper, they are made up of several different layers. For example, a classic, single-wall cardboard consists of two outer cover layers and a corrugated layer in between.

The total number of these layers varies depending on the type of corrugation. The latter is determined by the respective corrugation height and width and is decisive for the load-bearing capacity of a carton. You will find the following flute types in our range:

The E-flute (also called "microwave") is characterized by particularly small flutes with a height of only 1.5 mm and is mainly used for shipping boxes for products with low weight. We recommend a maximum load of 7 kg.

The B-flute (also called "fine flute") has 3 mm high flutes, thus can easily carry loads of up to 14 kg and is thus a much thicker and more robust choice than the E-flute as a material for shipping packaging.

EB flute is a double flute board type which combines E and B flute. The two flutes measure a total of 4.5 mm. This results in a payload that can withstand a filling weight of up to 32 kg. Therefore, the EB flute is fundamentally an excellent choice of material for transport packaging.

FORMATS: CUSTOM-FIT SIZES

When choosing the format, there are several factors to consider. For example, the carton should be neither too small nor unnecessarily large. After all, the contents must not be squashed or swirled around too much during transport.

You can choose from the following standard formats:

• • Maxi letter: 350 x 240 x 45 mm
• • S package: 250 x 150 x 90 mm
• • M package: 340 x 200 x 140 mm
• • L package: 400 x 250 x 240 mm

Tip: Every additional square centimeter of cardboard means additional consumption of valuable resources. In addition, empty space in packaging often has to be filled with materials such as Styrofoam and air cushions. This harms the environment and is not well received by many customers. So always keep the issue of sustainability in mind when choosing a format.

LAYOUT AND DESIGN

The shipping box is the first aspect that is noticed when goods are delivered. Nevertheless, the value of attractively designed shipping packaging is still underestimated by many companies. However, those who manage to make a good first impression at this stage are clearly at an advantage. For this reason, we offer you maximum scope for creativity when it comes to design.

The choice of material: The design work already begins with the selection of the cardboard type. With regard to the cardboard color, there are several options here. On the one hand, the material can be kept either completely in white or in brown. On the other hand, a white outer side can also be combined with a brown inner side for the E and B flute.

The respective advantages: Brown natural cardboard is and looks particularly ecological. It is therefore perfect for achieving a sustainable look. White cardboard, on the other hand, brings out colored imprints particularly strongly and color-intensively.

The print: On our shipping boxes, both the outside and the inside are fully printable. You can choose freely from all colors of the Euroscale. This results in countless possibilities for incorporating playful designs that make your packaging an effective eye-catcher.

By the way: We add color to your boxes with digital printing. This enables us to achieve an absolutely high-quality print image with strong colors and sharp outlines. What's more, digital printing is a cost-effective and time-saving process even for small and medium-sized print runs.

Personalization: Thanks to digital printing, we also have the option of adding varying motives and texts to your packaging - without stopping and in the same print run.

This means you can surprise your customers, for example, with individual greetings or QR codes for participation in discount promotions. This way, even unpacking the products becomes an experience.

Finishing: The final visual touch is achieved (optionally) by applying a protective varnish or lamination. Apart from additional resistance to soiling and external influences, this gives your shipping boxes a particularly elegant surface with either a glossy or matte finish.
