Materials for flexible packaging

AlOx - aluminium oxide

The abbreviation AlOx stands for aluminium oxide and describes an ultra-thin, high-barrier inorganic coating that is usually applied to PET and BOPP films using a vacuum process. AlOx barriers are applied to the carrier film with a thickness in the nanometre range and are transparent.

Aluminium

Aluminium (ALU) is used in packaging film as a thin functional layer when particularly high levels of protection are required. Aluminium barriers provide the ultimate protection against oxygen, water vapour and light. The most common application is as a middle layer in PET/ALU/PE composite materials; which protects the sensitive aluminium and at the same time enables the best processing properties.

Film thickness

The film thickness, also known as film thickness, is measured in micrometres (µm) and, depending on the application, is a decisive factor for film stability, product protection and printing and finishing options. Films are used in various areas such as logistics, packaging production and construction. Depending on the application, films have special properties such as:

Monomaterial

In the context of flexible packaging, a monomaterial refers to a material that is primarily made from one type of plastic – typically PE or PP-based. As a common rule of thumb for design for recycling, a structure is considered ‘mono’ if at least 90% of its total weight consists of the target polymer. The remaining portion may consist of printing inks, adhesives or thin functional layers such as barrier films – provided these do not interfere with the recycling process.

EVOH

The abbreviation EVOH stands for ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer. In flexible packaging, EVOH is used as a thin, organic barrier layer to protect products primarily from oxygen (and thus oxidation and aroma loss). In packaging films, EVOH is usually transparent and is therefore suitable for clear high-barrier packaging.

Metallisation

Metallisation refers to aluminium-metallised barriers that are applied to a carrier film (e.g. BOPP or PET) in nanometre-thin layers using vacuum coating (PVD). This process enables very high oxygen, water vapour and light barriers to be achieved with minimal material usage.

PET - polyester

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is a dimensionally stable, highly printable type of plastic that is primarily used as a printing and outer film in flexible packaging. Its excellent thermal stability in particular enables high mechanical loads and ensures dimensionally stable repeats over long print jobs.

PE - polyethylene

Like PP, polyethylene (PE) belongs to the polyolefin group and is one of the most popular packaging materials due to its properties. Polyethylene is considered tough, stable and easy to weld. It is therefore mainly used as an internal sealing medium for various flexible packaging such as bags, flow packs and sachets. In modern mono-material structures, PE in the form of MDO-PE is also used as a PET substitute for printing films. So-called coex films are often used for flexible packaging such as stand-up pouches – in this process, EVOH barriers, for example, are already incorporated (extruded) into the PE film during film production.

Individually printed

Custom-sized stand-up pouches, individually printed

Packaging warehouse offers you a wide selection of stand-up pouches, flat pouches and sachets – in fixed and custom sizes. You can choose from more than 18 high-quality materials and numerous customisation options, such as resealable zippers, Euro holes for the point of sale and elegant matt or gloss finishes. Thanks to their reliable barrier properties, stand-up pouches and flat pouches offer optimum aroma protection.
They are food-safe, odourless and tasteless and ensure long-lasting freshness of the contents. This benefits not only foods such as coffee, dried fruit, nuts and spices, but also products such as pastes, liquids, hygiene products and cleaning agents. The packaging protects effectively against oxygen, moisture and, if required, UV radiation. An integrated zipper also allows easy resealing – for lasting freshness even after opening.

The difference between stand-up pouches and flat pouches

The main difference between stand-up pouches and flat pouches lies in their construction and functionality. Stand-up pouches have a stable base that allows them to stand upright on their own – ideal for presentation on shelves or sales areas. Their larger filling volume makes them particularly suitable for larger products or refill packs, such as food, personal care products or household goods. If required, they can be customised with Euro holes or zippers.

Flat pouches, on the other hand, are a more compact, flatter packaging solution that is particularly suitable for smaller or flat products such as samples, spices, spare parts or cosmetics. Depending on requirements, they are available with a 2-side or 3-side seal: with a 2-side seal, the pouch is sealed on two sides, while the bottom is folded over and the top remains open and is sealed after filling. This variant is well suited to simple filling processes and is mainly used for small flat pouches.
The 3-side seal is mainly used for large flat pouches, as these are often made from several material webs. Flat pouches can also be equipped with Euro holes and other customisations for the point of sale. The choice between stand-up pouches and flat pouches ultimately depends on the product type, desired presentation and logistical requirements.

Printed Stand up Pouches
Of course, there are many other types of bags on the market besides our standard range – such as block bottom bags, pointed bags and cross bottom bags. You can find a detailed overview of these in our magazine article ‘Bag comparison – Doypacks / Flat Pouches / block bottom bags and much more’. Feel free to take a look if you are interested in the differences and possible uses.

For attention at the POS – printed Stand up Pouches

A strong brand image starts with the packaging – and our printed Stand up Pouches provide the perfect stage for this. Unlike conventional solutions, which are simply labelled, we enable full-surface printing on your pouches – and, if desired, in quantities as small as 250 pieces. This is made possible by our modern digital printing technology, which allows maximum design freedom even for small quantities.

Two printed Stand up Pouches for children's cereal

A special highlight: we use a reverse printing process. This involves applying the design between two plastic layers before the lamination process, providing lasting protection – for brilliant colours that won't scratch or fade due to external influences. This means that your packaging design will always be a real eye-catcher, even after transport and during use.

Thanks to a wide range of materials – from matt to glossy, from paper to plastic, from transparent to opaque – you can tailor your customised packaging perfectly to your product and brand. Whether you're looking for an elegant metallic finish, a sustainable kraft paper look or Stand up Pouches with customised windows: at packaging warehouse, you can design packaging that not only protects, but also inspires.

Would you like some inspiration? We would be happy to send you a sample box containing bags made from all of our materials.

The advantages of Stand up Pouches

Stand up Pouches combine advantages such as functionality, design variety and sustainability. Not only are they particularly efficient in terms of production and logistics, they also offer maximum product safety and versatile presentation options – whether in brick-and-mortar retail or e-commerce.

The most important advantages at a glance:

  • Material and resource efficiency: Up to 95% less material used than rigid packaging.
  • Low storage and transport costs: Low volume saves storage, transport and disposal costs.
  • Excellent product safety: outstanding barrier against moisture, oxygen and UV.
  • Resealability: Optional zip fastener for longer freshness after opening.
  • Attractive product presentation: free-standing, fully printable and POS-optimised.

Compared to packaging made of glass, paper or cardboard, stand up pouches offer numerous advantages. You can find a detailed overview in our magazine article ‘Stand-up pouches: the 5 advantages compared to glass and cardboard’.
Various sizes of stand up pouches

The perfect filling volume – custom-sized stand-up pouches

Whether you need a small product sample or large-volume contents, at packaging warehouse you will find the right stand-up pouch for every filling volume. We offer two flexible options: choose either a 100% custom size, where you can freely define the width, height and bottom depth in millimetres – perfectly matched to your product and requirements.

Alternatively, six practical standard sizes are available: 100 ml, 250 ml, 500 ml, 750 ml, 1000 ml and 1500 ml. We produce these in a cost-efficient collective printing process. Around 70% of our customers already benefit from these formats thanks to particularly attractive unit prices and a broad range of applications.
If you still need a special size, this is no problem: we manufacture pouches from a minimum size of 90 × 80 mm + 50 mm bottom depth through to particularly large versions of up to 450 × 600 mm + 130 mm bottom depth, depending on the combination of individual dimensions. We can also adapt the material thickness on request: thinner films, such as 80 µm, are primarily suitable for smaller pouches, while thicker films, such as 130 µm, provide the necessary stability for large pouches.

Because the filling volume of different products can vary significantly from the reference value of water, depending on density and consistency, we have created a practical table for you. It shows how much of different products, such as coffee, nuts or pasta, fits into our standard sizes from 100 ml to 1500 ml, making it easier to select the right pouch format for your product. Please note that these values are guidelines and that the ideal filling volume or product density may vary.

Stand-up pouches – the most environmentally friendly and secure packaging

The most important task of primary packaging, such as a stand-up pouch, is the reliable protection of the packaged product. Especially with food products, sensitive contents must be protected from external influences such as oxygen, moisture and UV radiation. At the same time, the packaging itself must prevent aromas from escaping – a decisive factor for aromatic products such as coffee or tea.

At the same time, the demand for sustainable packaging solutions is growing, both among consumers and due to legal requirements. Modern packaging must therefore not only protect the product, but also be environmentally friendly and recyclable. packaging warehouse offers tailor-made solutions for this: our range extends from premium high-barrier films for maximum product safety to recyclable barrier papers from innovation leader Koehler Paper. In this way, we combine product protection and sustainability in flexible packaging – individually tailored to your product.

What does HACCP mean?

HACCP is the abbreviation for ‘Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points’. It is a hazard analysis whose main objective is to protect consumer health. This is achieved by avoiding possible and potential hazards in food production. A hazard is defined as any undesirable event in the production of food that could pose a health risk to consumers.

All films used come from certified suppliers in Germany, which not only ensures consistently high quality, but also short procurement routes and a stable supply chain. Depending on the application, we offer recyclable mono-materials made of PE or PP as well as high-performance composite structures such as PET/PE or PAP/PE. High barriers such as EVOH, AlOx or metallisation, which are either extruded directly into the carrier film or laminated as a separate layer between the sealing and printing film, ensure optimum product protection and a long shelf life. Many of our films are also available in different thicknesses so that they can be precisely adapted to the respective bag size and intended use.

Printing technologies – order small and large quantities

We offer two proven processes for printing our Stand up Pouches and Flat Pouches: digital printing and flexographic printing. We use both printing processes to print the films using reverse printing. This involves applying the print image to the back of the film and then protecting it with lamination – ideal for lasting colour brilliance and abrasion resistance. We print on high-quality films made of BOPP, MDO-PE or PET, available in either a matt or glossy finish. Both the digital printing toners and the flexographic printing inks are fully food-certified. Digital printing is particularly suitable for small to medium runs of 250 pieces or more and enables fast production within 10–14 working days – without cliché costs. Flexographic printing is ideal for larger quantities and offers the option of using special colours such as Pantone – however, this incurs additional costs for the required printing plates.

Lamination process – bonding the films for maximum stability

Immediately after printing, our films are bonded to the base material in a lamination process. This step ensures maximum stability, protection and durability of the packaging. We ‘marry’ the printed film to the carrier material – a process that combines the advantages of both components. Basically, this lamination process can be carried out in two ways: thermal lamination or wet lamination. We exclusively use wet laminating, as it allows us to process almost all material combinations – even heat-sensitive films. We use a solvent-free polyurethane adhesive that securely bonds the films and ensures odourless, food-safe packaging. After laminating, the rolls must be left to cure completely in a special heat cabinet for 3 to 5 days to ensure the highest quality and stability.

Bag production & component selection – zippers, Euro holes and much more.

After laminating the films, the actual bag production takes place. The desired flat or Stand up Pouches are formed from the printed and laminated film web. Depending on the bag size, we manufacture these either from a single web or – for particularly large formats – from two or three individual webs. All sides and the bottom are precisely sealed and the desired components are incorporated. On request, we can equip the bags with practical extras such as resealable zippers, tear notches or a Euro hole. Flat Pouches can be sealed on two or three sides. Our standard is the single-web zip fastener, but for powder products we also offer the option of a Velcro zip fastener. All bags are checked for leaks during production in accordance with ASTM D3078 and carefully documented.

You can select all additional options such as zippers, tear tabs, Euro holes or standard round holes individually in the configurator and combine them as required. A typical example is the combination of a tear tab and a zipper: this makes the packaging particularly easy to open and then conveniently resealable – perfect for products or fill quantities that are not used up at once.

Individual viewing windows in free form – possible with white printing

To design a customised viewing window for your Stand up Pouches or Flat Pouches, we use transparent films and the colour scheme ‘4/0 colour + white’. The white print is placed as opaque white under the print motif and ensures that printed areas appear opaque and colourfast. Unprinted areas remain transparent, creating a viewing window that gives your product a high-quality look. For a particularly clear and transparent window, we recommend a glossy film surface. A matt material, on the other hand, can make the window appear slightly milky. You can find detailed information on the correct application of opaque white in our print data guidelines for flexible packaging. If you have any questions, our media designers are always happy to help and provide you with expert advice. Alternatively, you can find all the important information you need to create your individual print files in our print data guidelines for Stand up Pouches and Flat Pouches.

Sustainable packaging – Stand up Pouches made from recyclable materials

Unprinted PP Stand up Pouches

PP mono films

Our Stand up pouches made from PP mono films (recycling code number 5) offer a sustainable and high-quality packaging solution for food and liquids. The film composites developed in EN are recyclable and meet the requirements of the PPWR (Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation), making them a future-proof solution for environmentally conscious packaging concepts. Available in white (116, 123, 146 µm), transparent (111 µm) and silver metallic (111 µm), they guarantee the highest standards of quality, stability and printability. Thanks to the punched tear tabs, the bags can be opened effortlessly, while the selectable surfaces – matt, glossy or soft-touch – create a special haptic experience for the end customer. In addition, our PP films impress with their excellent barrier performance (OTR and WVTR <0.1), which reliably protects products from oxygen, water vapour and UV radiation. Our recyclable and PPWR-compliant stand up pouches thus combine sustainability, product safety and attractive presentation at the point of sale.

PE mono films

Our Stand up Pouches made from PE mono films are a sustainable and versatile packaging solution. They are, of course, recyclable and PPWR-compliant. The specially developed film composites feature an integrated EVOH barrier that offers high protection against oxygen and water vapour (OTR and WVTR ≤1), thereby reliably extending the shelf life of sensitive foods. The PE bags are available in white (95 and 125 µm) and transparent (95 and 125 µm). They meet the highest standards of quality, stability and printability. The bags have good tear-opening properties – although not quite as smooth as PP mono films – and can be customised with a matt or glossy surface finish. Our PE mono films thus combine sustainability, product protection and attractive presentation options, making them the ideal choice for manufacturers who rely on modern, recyclable packaging.

Paper without plastic

Our heat-sealable papers without plastic are the perfect solution for sustainable packaging that relies entirely on environmentally friendly materials. Both variants are coated on the inside with a water-based varnish, are plastic-free, PPWR-compliant and can be easily recycled with waste paper. The barrier paper (75 µm) has an integrated medium-high barrier, is certified for direct contact with food and provides reliable protection against external influences. The second material without a barrier (65 µm) is ideal when no additional protective layer is required. Both materials are similarly stable and are particularly suitable for smaller and lighter products. With their single-coated paper surface, they impress with their natural look and good printability. Our heat-sealable papers are therefore an environmentally friendly and practical alternative to plastic bags and meet the highest standards for sustainable packaging solutions.

Extensive range of applications

Stand up Pouches for all industries

Use as primary or secondary packaging

Our Stand up Pouches, Flat Pouches, sachets and roll goods are certified for direct food contact and are therefore suitable for use as primary packaging without restriction. Whether for solid, paste-like or liquid foods, our pouches offer a safe and hygienic packaging solution. Vacuum sealing or filling under a protective atmosphere is also possible without any problems, ensuring that the freshness and shelf life of your products are optimally preserved.

In addition, our flexible packaging is also ideal for use as secondary packaging. Not only does it protect the product from external influences, it also provides an attractive presentation at the point of sale. Typical areas of application include foodstuffs, technical components, cosmetic products, textiles and all kinds of non-food items.

Stand up Pouches in direct contact with food

Our Stand up Pouches are specially designed and certified for direct contact with food. All materials used comply with the latest legal requirements and regulations, including PFAS, REACH and NIAS. This ensures that your products are always packaged in a legally compliant and safe manner.

Depending on the packaging size, we offer different material thicknesses that are optimally tailored to the respective application:

  • For smaller formats, such as bar or portion packaging: 30–80 µm
  • For larger packaging, such as Doypacks or bags with a higher filling weight: 82–146 µm

In addition, materials with increased UV protection are available to reliably protect particularly sensitive foods – such as oils, nuts or snacks – from quality loss due to sunlight.

Stability even for large filling volumes

We also offer reliable solutions made from particularly sturdy materials for larger packaging sizes starting at 1,000 ml. Our standard range includes, for example, a 146 µm PP monomaterial. Thanks to its integrated CPP inner layer, this material offers significantly increased stability and is ideal for bulky or heavier contents.

To further increase resilience, we have specially adapted our Doypack sealing tools for large formats. This further enhances stability, particularly in the typical risk areas of a Doypack.

For applications with very high filling weights or special requirements, we also offer LLDPE films. These have excellent mechanical properties and ensure maximum durability – even for large packaging or demanding transport and storage conditions.

Another advantage: the width of the seal seams can be flexibly adjusted. Our standard size is 7.5 mm, but this can be increased to 15 mm if required. This ensures that even heavy or bulky contents are guaranteed to be packaged securely and tightly.

The materials can be individually adapted in terms of barrier properties, feel, sustainability and design, ensuring that every application is optimally covered.

Thanks to modern printing and finishing techniques, our Doypacks also become powerful brand ambassadors at the point of sale – functional, sustainable and visually appealing at the same time.

No matter what industry you are in, with our packaging solutions you get a product that combines safety, stability and a convincing appearance.

Simply fill and seal Stand up Pouches

Our Stand up Pouches can be supplied with either a closed or open zip. If the zip is in the open position upon delivery, the pouch is usually shaped using compressed air before filling: it is placed over a plastic mandrel, from which a short burst of air inflates the pouch and makes it dimensionally stable.

This is followed by filling – either manually, semi-automatically or fully automatically, depending on requirements. After filling, the zipper usually remains open while the final seal is applied to the top using a heat sealing device. Depending on the type of material, the sealing temperatures required for this range between 90 °C and 170 °C.

We also provide the right technology for efficient processes: with a semi-automatic sealing machine available from us, all common materials can be reliably sealed – at a rate of up to 20 bags per minute.
