Guide to seal edge bags

Materials for flexible packaging

AlOx - aluminium oxide

The abbreviation AlOx stands for aluminium oxide and describes an ultra-thin, high-barrier inorganic coating that is usually applied to PET and BOPP films using a vacuum process. AlOx barriers are applied to the carrier film with a thickness in the nanometre range and are transparent.

Aluminium

Aluminium (ALU) is used in packaging film as a thin functional layer when particularly high levels of protection are required. Aluminium barriers provide the ultimate protection against oxygen, water vapour and light. The most common application is as a middle layer in PET/ALU/PE composite materials; which protects the sensitive aluminium and at the same time enables the best processing properties.

Barrier films

A barrier film is a barrier layer integrated into the packaging that protects food, cosmetic products or industrial goods from external influences such as oxygen, water vapour, UV radiation or even mineral oils.

Film thickness

The film thickness, also known as film thickness, is measured in micrometres (µm) and, depending on the application, is a decisive factor for film stability, product protection and printing and finishing options. Films are used in various areas such as logistics, packaging production and construction. Depending on the application, films have special properties such as:

Monomaterial

In the context of flexible packaging, a monomaterial refers to a material that is primarily made from one type of plastic – typically PE or PP-based. As a common rule of thumb for design for recycling, a structure is considered ‘mono’ if at least 90% of its total weight consists of the target polymer. The remaining portion may consist of printing inks, adhesives or thin functional layers such as barrier films – provided these do not interfere with the recycling process.

EVOH

The abbreviation EVOH stands for ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer. In flexible packaging, EVOH is used as a thin, organic barrier layer to protect products primarily from oxygen (and thus oxidation and aroma loss). In packaging films, EVOH is usually transparent and is therefore suitable for clear high-barrier packaging.

Metallisation

Metallisation refers to aluminium-metallised barriers that are applied to a carrier film (e.g. BOPP or PET) in nanometre-thin layers using vacuum coating (PVD). This process enables very high oxygen, water vapour and light barriers to be achieved with minimal material usage.

PET - polyester

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is a dimensionally stable, highly printable type of plastic that is primarily used as a printing and outer film in flexible packaging. Its excellent thermal stability in particular enables high mechanical loads and ensures dimensionally stable repeats over long print jobs.

PE - polyethylene

Like PP, polyethylene (PE) belongs to the polyolefin group and is one of the most popular packaging materials due to its properties. Polyethylene is considered tough, stable and easy to weld. It is therefore mainly used as an internal sealing medium for various flexible packaging such as bags, flow packs and sachets. In modern mono-material structures, PE in the form of MDO-PE is also used as a PET substitute for printing films. So-called coex films are often used for flexible packaging such as stand-up pouches – in this process, EVOH barriers, for example, are already incorporated (extruded) into the PE film during film production.

Sealed edge bags: versatile packaging solutions

Sealed-edge bags are extremely versatile packaging solutions that are widely used in various industries thanks to their high puncture resistance and good oxygen and moisture barrier properties. Their applications range from the food industry to pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. These bags are characterised by their double-sided sealed edge, which ensures a secure and permanent seal of the selected material without the need for an additional closure mechanism.

Sealed edge bags: structure and properties

The structure of a seal-edge bag usually consists of several layers of high-quality materials such as PE, PET, aluminium or natural paper, which provide an optimal barrier against moisture, oxygen and other external influences. These multi-layer material composites not only ensure a high level of product protection, but also a long shelf life of up to 24 months for the packaged products. This is supported by various barrier layers made of aluminium, EVOH or AlOx, for example.

In addition, the seal edge bag is designed to offer various additional options, including a tear tab, a press seal / press seal, a Euro hole for easy retail presentation and multi-colour printing for attractive product presentation. The alternative option of labelling on the seal edge bags allows for easy identification and brand boosting for manufacturers and retailers. Printed labels can also be found in our shop.

Printed seal edge bags
The manufacturing process involves folding a long strip of material in the middle, followed by creasing. The left and right sides are then welded together by machine, while the top remains open to allow filling.

Possible applications for seal edge bags

Sealed-edge bags have a wide range of applications. They are ideal for packaging foodstuffs such as coffee, snacks, dried fruit and frozen products, as they enable safe and hygienic storage. They are also used in the pharmaceutical industry for packaging tablets, capsules and powders, as they provide a reliable barrier against moisture and light. In the cosmetics industry, they are used for packaging creams, lotions and other liquid or semi-liquid products. They are also often used for single-use portions, which further expands their range of applications.

Sealed edge bags in cannabis and CBD packaging

The growing legalisation and acceptance of cannabis and CBD products have led to an increasing demand for high-quality packaging solutions. Seal edge bags perfectly meet these requirements by not only ensuring safe storage, but also preserving the freshness and quality of the products. Thanks to their versatility, seal edge bags can be manufactured in various sizes and shapes to meet the different requirements of cannabis and CBD packaging. They are user-friendly and offer practical features such as resealable zippers and tear-off tabs. The aesthetic design of so-called Flat Pouches, with multi-colour printing and labelling options, helps to strengthen the brand image and present the products in an appealing way. This is crucial in a competitive market where packaging has a significant influence on consumers' purchasing decisions.

Flat Pouches made of kraft paper

Seal edge bags offer a number of advantages

Secure sealing
The double-sided sealing edge ensures a secure and permanent seal without additional closure mechanisms.
High puncture resistance
They are robust and offer high resistance to punctures, making them ideal for protecting sensitive products.
Good oxygen and moisture barrier
They provide an effective barrier against oxygen and moisture, which extends the shelf life of products and protects them from spoilage.

Versatility
Sealed edge bags are used in various industries, including the food, pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries, due to their adaptability to different packaging requirements.

Space-saving
They are space-saving and easy to store and transport, which improves efficiency in logistics.

Transparent options
Many seal edge bags are transparent, allowing consumers to see the contents, which makes the product more attractive and builds trust.
Customisable sizes and shapes
They can be manufactured in various sizes and shapes to meet the specific requirements of different products.
Easy to fill
Sealed edge bags are easy to fill and seal, making the packaging process efficient.
Point-of-sale display
Sealed-edge bags with Euro slot hanger enable space-saving and attractive presentation in retail outlets, as they can be easily attached to sales displays or shelves. High visibility in the shop increases accessibility for customers and potentially boosts sales figures.
