What are food labels?

Strictly speaking, food labels are the same stickers you know from other packaging. However, when labeling food, you must ensure that you do not violate food law. How food is labeled is regulated uniformly throughout Europe by the Food Information Regulation (LMIV). The LMIV has been valid since December 13, 2014, and with regard to nutritional labeling since December 13, 2016.

In principle, the following information is mandatory to be indicated on the food:

Net quantity	Is the contained quantity of the product by number of pieces, weight or by volume
Best-before or use-by date	Indicate how long a food retains its specific properties when properly stored
Company address	The company and the address of the food are mentioned
Origin labeling	Is only prescribed for a few food groups, for example for unprocessed meat and fruit and vegetables
Instruction manual	If it is necessary for the food to be used properly
Alcohol content	Is indicated on alcoholic beverages with an alcohol content above 1.2 percent by volume
Nutritional labeling	Includes caloric value, fat, saturated fat, carbohydrates, sugar, protein and salt. The values refer to 100 grams/milliliter of the food product
Food imitations	Labeling requirement to protect consumers from deception, substitute ingredients must be clearly indicated
Refined vegetable oils and fat	The specific vegetable origin of the oil/fats must be indicated
Assembled piece of meat / fish	Fish and meat, which consist of different pieces, must bear an appropriate marking
Freeze date	For meat and fish, the date of freezing must be indicated
Food containing caffeine	Beverages and food with increased caffeine content must be labeled
Labeling of nanomaterials	Identify all ingredients that are present in the food in the form of engineered nanomaterials
Internet trade	Even in online trading, all mandatory information must be available before the purchase is concluded
Defrost note	Foodstuffs which have been defrosted before sale are marked with the defrosting notice

Foods such as fresh fruits, vegetables and potatoes are exempt from these regulations if they have not been "treated" or foods that consist of only one ingredient.

What is the meaning of the various symbols and icons on food labels?

In addition to the legally required labels on food, there are a large number of seals and symbols. The awarding of such labels and test marks varies widely. For buyers, the seals evoke certain quality expectations, are also often used for marketing purposes or are intended to facilitate the purchase decision. We would like to introduce you to some well-known symbols in more detail:

	EU organic seal	All packed organic products produced within the EU must bear this mark since July 1, 2010. It consists of a stylized leaf on a green background. Consumers should be able to quickly recognize that the food is organically produced.
	German organic seal	The hexagonal German organic seal is a voluntary label. It may be used in addition to the EU organic logo. The prerequisite is that the company has already been certified according to EU regulations for organic farming.
	Fairtrade	With this seal, all ingredients must be 100% Fairtrade certified raw materials. Fairtrade sets social, ecological and economic standards. In addition to this seal, there is a whole range of other seals on fair production conditions, such as the Rainforest Alliance, GEPA, Banafair, fair for life...
	Without genetic engineering	The logo may only be used if the food and the food ingredients used are not genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and have not been produced from GMOs. Consumers can decide against the use of genetically modified plants - this promotes traditional cultivation.
	MSC seal	MSC stands for Marine Stewardship Council. The MSC is a non-profit, international organization for the protection of the oceans and fish stocks. The seal identifies fish and seafood from environmentally friendly fisheries. All fisheries with the MSC seal, fish sustainably and meet the MSC environmental standards.
	Vegetarian / Vegan quality seal	The label is intended to make it easier for vegetarians/vegans throughout Europe to choose when buying food. Under the plant symbol, it is stated directly below whether the product is vegan or vegetarian. Vegetarian products must not contain any animal ingredients. In the case of vegan products, all ingredients, processing aids, additives, carriers, flavors and enzymes of animal origin must be omitted in order for them to be awarded the vegan seal.
	Identity marker	The oval mark is displayed on packages of dairy, egg, fish and meat products. It is a mandatory mark so that food monitoring can trace the products back to the manufacturer. The company that last handled or packaged the product operates according to EU-wide hygiene standards and is monitored accordingly.

Our bestsellers among the materials are our white paper and the (polypropylene) PP film in matt. However, depending on the application, a different material / material property is needed. Paper is often used for the production of food labels, especially for bottles and jars, because the labels can be removed without residues. Paper is also the optimum solution for sealing labels, as it makes the seal easier to tear. PP film can also be used for bottles, especially if the labels are to be resistant to scratches and abrasion. For transparent containers whose contents should remain visible, our transparent PP film is suitable. Rules for the labeling of fruit and vegetables

Labels must be able to meet some requirements in order to be approved for food. If the labels come into direct contact with the food, for example in the case of unpackaged fruit and vegetables, they must be food-safe labels. This means that neither the adhesive nor the printed ink may transfer substances to the food. These regulations must also sometimes be observed in the case of indirect contact, for example if substances can reach the food through the packaging. So only food-safe labels may be used for such purposes. The inks and adhesive must be food-safe to prevent contamination of the food. In addition, the adhesive must be odorless to avoid irritation.

Food safety and consumer protection: The most important requirements for food labels

There are five basic requirements that food packaging (including labels) must meet:

The printed side must not come into direct contact with the contents. The inside therefore must not be printed.
Cut edges must be at least 5 mm wide and unprinted in special cases.
The print must be resistant to the action of the food. (Test standard DIN 16524-3)
The print must not affect the foodstuff in terms of odor, appearance and taste. (Test standard DIN 10955)
The printing ink and auxiliaries must not release any questionable components into the food.
